The Freshmen Leadership Institute is a program that is specifically designed to set your incoming freshman up for a successful high school career, starting from the moment s/he enters GWHS's doors. You and your child will be given a plan that will help you map out a successful and enriching academic high school journey using the teachers, counselors and support services during the school day, and continuing into the Eagle Period.
F.L.I. features:
- Orientation Day
- Academic Roadmap for Success (ARS)
- Eagle Period: academic and enrichment programs from dismissal until 6pm
- Senior/Freshman Buddy Homerooms
ORIENTATION DAY Lunch Provided
Student will:
- Understand the Academic Roadmap for Success (ARS)
- Build a sense of connection with the school, teachers and each other
- Gain knowledge of resources at school
- Receive their class schedules
Parents/Teacher will:
- Talk about research on 8th to 9th grade transition
- Discuss their roles in ARS, Eagle Period, etc...
- Team building with parents and teachers
- Gain knowledge of resources at GWHS
ACADEMIC PLAN FOR SUCCESS
Parents/Student will:
- Set academic expectations from 9th -12th grade and beyond
- Gain knowledge of A-G requirements
- Get familiar with AP/Honors classes and support
- Understand the credit accumulation process
- Learn how to prevent academic difficulties and who to call when they occur
EAGLE PERIOD
Students will:
- Participate in programs focused on fun, academics, identity, art, sports and leadership everyday after school
- Be tutored (in Teen Center Lite and Homework rooms) - some academic credit given
- Attend workshops to strengthen study skills, job readiness, time management and SAT preparation
SENIOR/FRESHMAN BUDDY HOMEROOMS
Students will:
- Participate in 2 activities per semester designed to help students connect with each other
